Haitians Slow to Apply for Protected Status

USCIS might be surprised by how few Haitians have applied for a temporary immigration status that would allow them to live and work here legally for a year and a half, but many who live and work in the Haitian community are not. A host of factors – the cost of filing, economic realities, class divisions within the Haitian community, red-tape logistics, and fear of making themselves known to immigration authorities – mean that many Haitians have taken a wait-and-see approach to TPS.

Netflix Celebrates 70th "Oz" Anniversary

Green lighting and a high-energy crowd turned Central Park into the Emerald City, celebrating the 70th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” with a free concert and a screening of the classic movie.

Families with young children – and the young at heart – turned out in droves for the event at Rumsey Playfield. It featured performances by Grammy-winning singer Jennifer Hudson and two-time winner of “Dancing With the Stars,” Julianne Hough.

The event was part of a commemorative promotion hosted by Netflix, which made the newly-restored movie available for anyone to watch online for free on October 3.
